I am unimaginably stressed out, and as I type this with tears blurring my vision, I can't help but think, "am I going to make it?" they try to prepare you a little, but I never knew college could be as expensive as it really is. So here I am, crying and typing a blog to at least slightly take a break from understanding the amount of money I have to put into this institution all on my own. I think back and kick myself for not doing more, not working harder to have more money on my paychecks, not going out for hundreds of scholarships, not saving every penny that goes into my pocket, because I- I just don't know how or what do for any of this. I'm not good with numbers, never have been, and they never taught me budgeting or how being on your own quite literally sucks. Why did I have to rush myself year after year, so excited to be out in the world as an "adult" when the world could care less about how good or bad I'm doing. Everything in my life is based around money, and I hate it, I hate it so so bad. We all know the saying 'money can't buy happiness' and sure it can't buy it directly but it sure will help you get better opportunities which will, in turn, point your life towards a brighter path.

Hm.

It looks my break is over. I'm off to study loan differences and somehow budget 23,000 extra dollars that I will be paying for the next four years of my life. As well as to look up strip clubs hiring in the area. (this would have used to be a joke, and the more I turn it over, it becomes more like a reality.)

I know a bit of you are much older than me, and you probably might just see this as me complaining, but I'm doing this all on my own and paying my own way through, and no one taught us how to do any of this, so I just got thrown in and was told to do it and do it right. Plus, I'm the first one to go to a university after high school in my family, so don't harp on me too bad, I'm just a tiny bit overwhelmed.

Max Heathen(other male) - Research possible grants and if/when they reject you reapply 2 more times. Its standard practice apparently in some places to auto reject. What are you seeking to major, minor in?

xxxalexxx(sub female) - I'm majoring in Theatre Education, Certification Track. I don't have a minor right now but I was thinking of Psychology maybe. And ill try to look for some grants, that's a good idea, thank you

rosethorn(sub female) - Firstly your doing so well and should be proud of yourself. Secondly, yes its great we can do all these things but... and its a big but.... everything is designed for two incomes someone to look after things and cover everything. One wage used to run a household it no longer does two are needed and if its just you its seriously tough. Thirdly i went for a job in a strip club i declined and took a loan out instead this wasn't for me but socially it wouldn't be acceptable with the training i was doing. If i had taken it i might be debt free now (im uk not usa its a bit different but gov loans didn't cover anything) the important thing is you do what your comfy with and what sits well with you.
No one teaches budgeting because they don't want people to be good at it .... there wouldn't be any benefit to credit otherwise.
Im not too bad at it pm me if i can help xxx

Bunnie - I understand you probably don’t want to hear this, but welcome to adulthood. It sucks huh. This is the place where we spend the rest of our lives trying to figure out something it seems everyone else has figured out except us.

Here’s a secret... none of us have figured it out.

Do the best you can with whatever resources you can find to help you. However, be very careful about the path you choose to walk from here. Don’t accept help from people who make you feel like there’s strings attached. Something that we don’t tend to have as much of when first starting out, is as much ability to understand how much our decisions can impact us later in life.

You found your way here... you’re a resourceful girl... look for work in the areas you’re already studying... you got this. *hugs*

xGiGix(sub female) - Alexxxx, I’ve gone through something similar through my college experience. Had my federal loans run out so I had to rush while beginning a new semester and find a way to meet the difference. I ended up having to apply for a private loan twice in order to make up the 14k that was missing. I had scholarships, grants, and loans. If you need someone to talk to about this or any advice, I’m always here!!

Sunshinegirl(sub female) - DONT DO 4 YEAR UNIVERSITY STRAIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL. ITS A HUUUUGE WASTE OF YOUR MONEY. Go to your local community college and complete the same GE classes for like 500$ cheaper then transfer. If you feel the need to move out and be on your own then get an apartment, a roommate, and a part time job. Here’s some brutally honest truth: don’t drown yourself in loans if the job at the end goal of this degree isn’t paying a lot. You will be in your mid 30’s with kids stressing about loans....and working a job that has nothing to do with what you majored in. Education is too expensive to bullshit and beat around the bush. I’m in college right now so I get it.

rosethorn(sub female) - Literally why many women feel they have to choose between kids and careers or feel they can't afford to have children

rosethorn(sub female) - Also annoys me why everyone has to have qualifications on paper to work (with some exceptions) that aren't always needed or in place of in house training. Means the person has to train themselves up to be given an opportunity to earn the company profits at tge expense of huge debt. Many jobs could be done through in house training and cost a third of what they do while earning. Its like we have forgotten people have to earn to survive.
