Partially, as others have said, it's a sensory fetish around latex. The feel of it, the smell of it, etc.

For others, it adds an aspect of de-identification. For example, a lot of practitioners in a casual scene will have a sub wear one so that they can pretend their partner is someone else. Or, it just stops at stripping the wearer of their identity, making them seem less human in an uncanny valley kind of way.

I have have not had one on since 1979 and even then it was not for fun. I have had friends use them for pot or just to freak people out. I have seen them in clubs and it is a turn on for some to have them on and not have others know who they are. There is just no way to look at someone and say " Hey Bob see you got new filters on cool. For others it is having their sub totally covered. It makes them a thing and not a human. It is just a thing that people like and do.
