Since I'm the one being choked, I can confidently say it's always light. I can breath.

When I was young, I was strangled when a male friend of mine got too upset because I accidentally ripped his shirt. Luckily, we were in a group setting and another male friend punched him and ripped the guy off of me. I had a phobia of people touching my neck for years. Allowing my husband to do this is a symbol of my trust for him. It is not to stop me from breathing.
When he decides to squeeze, I allow it for a few seconds, then tap his arm and he immediately loosens his grip.

I'm not sure if this is still dangerous. Please let me know.

Sounds to me that you're handling this correctly and safely. I absolutely adore the trust you have in him considering the trauma you experienced. Good Girl!

I would add, hopefully unnecessarily, that you should *never* engage in such play while intoxicated, nor in anger.
