She was very conscious of how loud her heels seemed to sound on the floor, the polished wooden boards adding their own creaks and groans as she opened the door to the study. The window at the opposite end of the room confirmed that winter night was was moonless as the garden and fields beyond were now in complete darkness. She wondered if it would be helpful if she closed the curtains or even put another log on the fire. Her thoughts were interrupted as the study door closed and he stepped towards her, a mug of hot chocolate in his right hand and by contrast, a gin & tonic in the other.
”sit down please,” his smile was warm. “Do make yourself comfortable”
She sat on the comfortable leather chesterfield with it’s worn, soft upholstery that made a her feel that she could just melt into it. He placed her mug within reach and then drew the curtains fully closed.
“You’ve dressed well, you make that dress look something special” she enjoyed the compliment, she recognised the sincerity and absently straightened the hem as if to modestly show less of her legs or at least hide the top of her stockings.
He took a sip from his gin & tonic.
