The cradle of wisdom

To me, thinking is something anyone can do. But just as you can practice anything in life, you can practice thinking. What sets you apart, then, is critical thinking. Your ability to see reason and logic. To construct arguments without fallacies or biases. It is important that you keep challenging yourself, and open yourself up to being wrong. And essentially, there is no shame in being wrong, but there is great shame in being wrong, and refusing to admit it.

With that grand introduction, I welcome you to my personal thoughts and musings. I can't promise there will be something for everyone here, and what I do end up putting up may be scarce. However, I always appreciate feedback and I enjoy debates. So if you have something to share, by all means, comment or message me directly.

This is a short, short story I wrote. Hope you enjoy, and let me know if you do/don't.
But bear in mind I am not a great writer, and there may be plenty of typos or grammatical errors.

-------------------------------------

Bright and early, the birds were chirping, and the first sun rays kissed the land. The young master, still in bed, were squirming uncomfortably, shaken from his dreaming stupor by the revealing of a new morning. The servant responsible for this rude awakening had made sure to bring encouragement for the young master to get out of bed. A silver tray consisting of a sweet, but healthy, breakfast was tempting the young master with its fragrant aroma. With eyes still full of sleep, the young master eventually gave up and arose.

It was not unusual for the young master to wake up this way. Day after day, this has been the way he would greet the new day. Assisted by several of the house’s servants, he would eat breakfast and get dressed. The day was like any other, the young master thought, but today would prove to be different. The young master’s father had not been one to give his full attention to his son, but he had never been cruel neither. He mostly left the care of his son in the hands of his capable staff and made sure his son was afforded every luxury. You might think this had spoiled the young master, but the young master had a pleasant personality and had never taken his life for granted.

It was shortly after waking up that he was called to his father’s study. The young master, initially believing himself to be in trouble of some kind, as his father had never summoned him to his personal study before, was nervous to say the least. Accompanied by two maids, he was escorted to the door, and then left to enter on his own. His father, standing with his back turned and looking out the window, beckoned for the young master to join him. The young master, looking out the window with his father, was asked a question.

“What do you see, my son?” his father asked.

The young master answered plainly “I see the morning sun, father, shining upon the land. I see our vast estate, and the people in it. It is another lovely day for our household”.

His father, not quite satisfied with the answer, but also not displeased, answered the question for his son.
“This is the land that you, one day, will govern, my son. Our family dynasty is noble and just, and our subjects happy and content”.

His father continued “It is my wish that you, today, find out why it is so, and tell me, before the sun sets, why it is that you are to be master of all you see”.

The young master, being curious, asked his father why he has presented him with such a task.

And his father replied “When I was your age, my father asked me the very same question, and he told me that if I did not have a good answer, then I would inherit nothing. Now I ask the same of you”.

Upon hearing those words, the young master froze for a moment. He had been taught by the finest scholars his whole life, but never had he been presented with a challenge carrying with it such high stakes. He was used to overcoming challenges and solving difficult problems, but in this case, he did not know where to start.

His father, having conveyed his message, gestured for the young master to leave his study. The young master, leaving the study, were again escorted by the two maids back to his own private room.

He pondered the nature of the question from his father, and he thought of answers to the question. Why would he be worthy of being the next master? Was it because of his upbringing? The way he thought and argued with logic? He did not know.

A younger maid, having heard that the young master had been summoned for the first time to his father’s study, knocked on the young master’s door. The young master allowed the maid to enter, and after she expressed her concern, told her of what his father had said.

“If you are to explain why you should be the next master, and you don’t know what it takes, then why not ask the servants and slaves of your father why he is the master?” said the young maid.

The young master’s expression brightened, and after he thanked the maid, and reassured her that he was alright, he set out to do as the maid had recommended.
