Sir John
After having my finger fixed it was not broken just dislocated I was taken to the ranch and my new life. It sounds dramatic but it was really more traumatic then I thought at the time it was were I learned that not only was I wrong about being a man I was taught what being a man was (Thank you sir John and ladies) hope I make you proud.
Now I am tall thin but I would learn I was what is called wiry, more the quarterback then the lineman look. I met Sir john Nicknamed the little mountain by the rest of the hands. He stands at 6"10" and I would guess 289 lbs. and if you could find any fat on him I'll give you a hundred I stand around 5'9" and he made me feel small he spoke to me in a voice that I was not expecting it was soft and gentile not loud and booming I learned later when he was mad or shouting a warning it was loud and commanding. He sat opposite me and asked me some questions by the end I felt so inadequate and useless he said to sum it up you can't cook, clean use any firearms build any thing well at least you can dress yourself and know how to care for horses so its not as bad as I thought it would be you are smart and able to learn. And then told me to see Rita and you can start to learn how to clean. That week while my finger mended I learned the difference between adequate and clean to standards I then learned how to cook not fancy just meat potato's and vegetables after that I was taught firearms use and safety and cleaning an maintenance this was given by both sir John and James sir John showed me the basics of safety and care Sir James showed me how to hit where I aimed this was harder then it sounds especially a handgun but learn I did. Next was how to build a shelter with just a knife (not easy as I found). buy the time we started to get ready to do the round-up that year and that was when I found out why I was taught these things. Round up and branding was done somewhere else you see. I came to find out that the ranch where I was brought was not where the cattle were kept it was used for horses and some young bulls sir James leased other land to raise the cattle we camped out there and made temporary corals for the round-up and branding theses where torn down after and the wood stacked for next season.
That was where I learned why he was so highly praised by the temporary wranglers those are men just hired for round-up in the spring and fall round-up for sale. first he paid better then anyone else so had his pick of men second was the party he had more food then anyone could eat served by what can only be described as the most attractive women you could find and in most cases served more then food.
After spring round-up and the party I was told to come to sirs office by the maid knock and wait. After enough time of standing there and trying to think of how I fucked up now the door opened and Rita and sir John came out and told me to go in. Jane came up to me wrapped me in her arms and kissed my cheek and said welcome Tim she then handed me a book on how to be a gentleman and said read this over and put it into practice from now on anything you don't understand ask me if I can't help you sir James will be able to help she then left. Sir James asked me to sit he looked at me and I felt as though I had just been judged found adequate and he said Tim tomorrow you will be working on the barn we are going to have two ladies coming to work with the horses and the bunkhouse is not cohabit able yet so they will live in the barn as stable hands they will be in charge of keeping it clean and since they will be living there I'm sure that it will be better kept then it has been He held up his hand and said don't take offence but you are just one man and there are now 12 horses and one of them will not let you near him that is not your fault either that is mine you see Warhorse is a very special breed of horse he is more like a companion and trained to defend his owner its early spring now and I will be leaving for the mountains soon so I will introduce you to warhorse so he will let you clean his stall from now on. You will be held responsible for training the three new horses coming and they must be ready by next year the male will be yours the fillies will be trained as well but they will be kept slightly more docile one is for lady Jane she is pure white and will be hers for riding. the other is one of warhorses fillies and she will be trained to protect her owner I will be back in six weeks and I will help you with training her to protect by next spring she will be needed for my trail companion. Sir you realize I have no experience in this, Yes I know but you will learn and I am told you have the gift with horses and just as important Jane and wolf like you and I trust both of them when it come to judging people.
