First time using a short BDSM whip

Caldbec(dom female) • Oct 26, 2020
I recently bought my first short BDSM whip from LoveHoney, it's a braided faux-leather short whip with a flat end on it.

It's very, very satisfying to swing, but this is my first time handling something like this. Is there anyone more experienced with whips like this who could help me consider posture, swing movements, and pace? I don't think porn would be a reliable resource for that kind of thing, so I thought I'd ask here.

Also the whip packs a punch (I know this because in one of my botched practices I got some recoil from it and it was intense) so I want to make sure I use this correctly so that I don't hurt any future partner past the point of pleasure.

Any input would be wonderful, thank you x

pillows and cushions are great. A towel over them even better! pick a towel with a nape...this is how fluffy it is, if you run your hand over it you can see where it was. If you have velvet even better!. Sorry littles *cringes* even a plush stuffie will work. The idea is you can see where you have laid your strike. Keep going until you can recreate each and every strike. You can then practice hitting the same spot over and over again at different heights, angles etc. Once you've got a little better at it....A dark color is also good cause you can talc/flour the whip and see the marks. Just mark sure you clean it off your whip (and watch your not breathing in talc too)

Once you've figured out how to handle the whip with no fuckups, then work on the safety, where to hit and how. Until you master the control of it and learn all the safety ....Avoid humans.

when your ready for the safety, then post again and learn that next icon_smile.gif

I had a Dom that would practice. He would mark the end of the whip with lipstick. He would get a heavier stuffy (I know it sounds so sad). He said the goal was to strike it but not knock it off the edge. If it knocked over then that meant he was striking to hard. The lipstick showed him exactly where he hit. 👍🏻 I have no idea if this is a normal way of going about things, I just enjoyed watching and empathizing with the stuffy. 😏

I have no other gauge, but I do know you can learn just about anything from YouTube! 😂😂😂

Good luck!

Just don't be a complete idiot about it. Look up where on the body it's okay to strike and practice your aim. Do it on yourself even (I highly recommend it that way you understand more intricately what you're doing to someone else). And when you use it on another person take it slow until your more adept.

And whips do hurt a lot so be mindful of who you're using it on and how much pain they can realistically handle. I'd suggest with any new equipment you get or new partners for that matter starting slow with more light play and moving forward from there.

First safety glasses and a wide brimmed hat. Vital for whip practice, particularly when learning, helps to avoid cut ears, cheeks, and an eye out. Whips are very dangerous, and mistakes can cause severe cuts. The crack one hears, when a whip is thrown, is the popper (cracker in some parts of the world) breaking the sound barrier. So extreme caution must be taken, and safety of the user while learning and the whip bottom (they should, in my view, wear safety glasses during scenes) when using a whip on them is very important.

You don't say how long the whip is, or type, whether its awhip with a heel knot, handle + thong + fall + popper (bullwhip), or a heel knot (very short handle) + thong, + fall + popper (Snake whip) assuming there is a fall and its not a whip where the popper is attached directly to the thong, a (Signal whip). I am going to assume its not a Australian stock whip or a Florida cow whip, not common in BDSM use, and not I would assume sold by lovehoney

So I am going to assume its a Snake whip or Signal whip type.

My advice is not to watch any BDSM videos, to start, but Sports/Americana/Country fair whip tutorial videos, because these will teach you the fundamental whip skills you need. There are plenty of whip tutorial videos on You Tube of the type I mention. Once you have learn't the basics, then and only then should you move on to whip use for BDSM. Again there are plenty of good tutorials on You Tube. Books on whip use are also available, but specific whip books for BDSM not so common.

Most will suggest you use a 6ft or longer whip to start because the roll out is slower than a 3 ft or 2 ft whip, which rolls out much faster after the whip is thrown, harder to correct mistakes. However, and I speak from personal experience here, very few clubs, never mind homes give you the space to throw a 6ft whip, or longer, safely (bystanders getting right behind you is common in clubs) and in homes ceiling height is a major issue. I have heard a fair number of funny stories told by subs, where a wanabe/uber dom used an 8ft bullwhip and managed to rip light fittings from ceilings. Being frank these idiots should not have been using a whip anywhere to start with. So this presents a problem, learn on a longer whip and transition to shorter, or start with a short whip. For myself I started with 3ft whips and mainly use those in clubs and at home. I favour kangaroo leather signal and snake whips, but also whips made from nylon, in particular dacron which behaves like broken in kangaroo leather.

Practice, practice, practice is the key, and don't use a whip on a person until you are accurate, repeatedly so, can crack before the strike (removes energy from the popper), can crack repeatedly. Then move on to target practice, striking the tips of straws, or another suitable target (one that you can see the strike easily) and once you are competent, accurate and safe then and only then use a whip on a person.

A love honey whip isn't going to be up to much, but fine to see if you like/take to whips, so if you do I would get a better whip from a quality whip maker. In the UK I would recommend, Jacks Floggers (his whips are lovely to use, but are not traditional whips, no belly inside) or a nylon whip from DS Whips (Edgeplay). I would suggest a 3ft Signal whip with an English eye to make popper changing (they need replaced from time to to time) easier or to easily permit trying different types of poppers. Believe it or not poppers made from different materials, longer/shorter, splayed ends or not make a difference to the sensations felt on the skin. Well worth trying.

At the more expensive end of things, whips made from kangaroo leather, I would suggest Victor Tella or Mojave Outliers, with a stronger nod to the latter, her whips are fabulous. Victor doesn't always make the whips, and some report quality variations. These suppliers are BDSM friendly.

Among the not friendly to BDSM whip makers (don't mention BDSM ever to them) I can recommend Bill Nones whips, Trinity Whips, Steve Townsend whips, and exo whips. Of these Exo Whips (Dacron nylon) snake whips are wonderful. If you ask nicely, they might make you a 'Leistungspeitsche' snake hybrid, which is among the best non kangaroo leather whip I have ever thrown, simply magic, and the closest to this is a Mike Murphy kangaroo whip, and sadly those are no longer available as Mike retired from whip making.

Draw a line on a piece of paper and clip it to a washing line and practice hitting that line. Practice daily. Video yourself doing that practice.

Think of the whip as an extension of your arm and unroll it like a snake uncoils itself.

Look at old Alex Cobra videos for reference. Alex uses a Bull whip and I prefer a hybrid Snake whip so it depends what whip you have (Snake or Bull whip). Something from Lovehoney is unlikely going to have a double belly so it may flop about too much.

Accuracy is key
Being able to whip lightly with control is important.

In my experience it's good to work it how it feels right, but to better your swings you can work with something heavier so you can increase muscle mass and muscle memory
