Knife play

My Dom is interested in knife play but I'm a little skeptical. I'm worried about him cutting too deep. My back is currently striped up when he uses his nails (I love my stripes, btw.) I'm just a little anxious.
For those who are into it, how do you make sure your partner doesn't wind up needing stitches?

Take it slowly and do your research. Practice cutting various things (pork and chicken especially) to get a feel for your knife.
Understand that different blades cut differently. A scalpel requires a different cutting style than a bowie knife.
Learn enough basic anatomy to understand where it is dangerous to cut. Learn basic first aid and how to stem blood flow and prevent infection. If your partner is not the type who likes to practice and do research, do not let them cut you.
