I've not seen that thread. I would have wanted to make my own tools whenever possible. I had always wanted to make a special wooden cage for a love slave that I would then craft and decorate based on their favorite fairy tale as well as personalized hardwood paddles. That kind of thing.

Maybe you all are money bags, but this gal lives on Social Security. Those "spatulas" that I found at Dollar Tree are not cheap plastic, they are Bamboo with rubber grips. Bamboo is one of the hardest materials that exists. I saw scaffolding made of it in HongKong in my younger days. And those clips you all think are cheap, hurt just as bad as something professionally made. Masters/Mistresses in those porn flicks sure don't mind using clothespins on their slaves.

And since when did we lower ourselves to making fun of what other people do or use in their kink lives?

No that didn't sound humorous to me. Perhaps you should add an addendum such as "just kidding" when you are. After all, we can't see your expressions, or hear your voice, or be in your head. A little help would serve well.
