If you mean Lifestyle tools: it is because, currently, I need something to do with my hands. I get ideas for toys and what not, so I make things to get them out of my mind. If you mean tools for around the house: it is because I want to have them at the ready in case I need them for repairs. I'm not one of those guys who enjoys having to stop in the middle of something to have to run to the hardware store. Yes I have jars of screws and bolts and nails sitting on my workbench |

As others have said "so you have them when you need them", but sometimes it's just toxic consumerism. This goes beyond tools, of course, but we are bombarded with ads constantly from all directions, and one of the best ways to sell people something, especially something they don't need, is to make them think they need it, and you can do that most easily by making them feel insecure and then hinting that your product will make them feel secure. Spoilers: works for selling ideology too. So when you spend your life having ads firehose-sprayed at you, telling you you're not good enough, you're not man enough, you're not handy like this 20-something chisseled bearded model, and then you see a beautiful 100pc tool chest on sale at Home Depot... |

I have bought tools that I just wanted to have on hand "just in case" and much later found that one time where it was the right time and place for that one tool. was under a house fixing a water leak. i needed a tool that could grab the pipe nut was curved so I could see around it. I had bought it just because it was curved and that was the only time I used it but it payed for itself that one time. It was also the day I realized if I was going to keep doing my job I needed to get rid of 20 pounds. I thought they where going to have to pull me out the fit was so tight. |

I'm in construction. Have been for 40 years. And my ohmy do I have some tools. Layered 4 deep in some areas. But I use most or all of them. But it might be more about being able to handle any circumstance. Being prepared. Maybe to be a better provider, something more primal like that. I know it gives me comfort when I know, " I got this". Someday I'll explain why I have six miter saws and 14 cordless drills.
