My recommendations may seem.... eclectic

The prince of Egypt (DreamWorks debut film, and an absolute masterpiece of animation)
7 samurai, an absolute classic of Japanese cinema
Princess mononoke, a more modern, animated Japanese masterpiece
The breadwinner/song of the sea/the book of kells; anything by that animation studio (forget the name, but they're excellent)
The brothers bloom, a great, silly little comedy with heart
The fantastic mr. Fox, Roald Dahl and Wes Anderson are a magnificent combination
Kill bill, especially 2
Monty python and the holy grail (I believe this is actually a must-watch, it has had so much cultural impact.)
Airplan
And finally pan's labyrinth. Contains some disturbing scenes, but is a gorgeous, sincere film.

Oh! thought of some more, some a bt overrated but they make a lot of pop culture references understandable.

Scott Pilgrim Vs the World
Army Of Darkness (this is a 3rd in a trilogy so you should probably watch the entire Evil Dead series)
Zoolander
Kubo and the two strings
High Fidelity
American Beauty
Secretary
Black Swan
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Stardust
Coraline
Inception
Dances with Wolves

I'll stop there for now
