50 SHADES OF GREY, WHATS YOUR OPINION?

I liked the books to an extent. The romance storyline…. And Anna’s inner voice was scarily similar to mine, added some comedy to it.

The inconsistency with colloquialisms based on where the story is set was annoying. In addition to linking Christians mental health and past to the lifestyle was a bit far fetched (even before I actually researched anything). Mind you the therapist actually dispelled that, it was Christian putting it out there.

The first book at the beginning, I thought touched on consent. Safewords a total of twice.

The movies were 100% disappointing

My 2cents, for what it’s worth.

I've never read the books and I've never seen the movies. Everyone I know and trust has assured me that I missed out on absolutely nothing worth reading or watching, lol.

50 Shades? 3 Things to love:

The toothbrush porn:

"I eye Christian's toothbrush. It would be like having him in my mouth. Hmm..."

The random:

"I don’t remember reading about nipple clamps in the Bible.”

The brain anatomy:

"..from a very tiny, underused part of my brain – probably located at the base of my medulla oblongata near where my subconscious dwells – comes the thought: He's here to see you."

It's so bad it's either awful or brilliant.

It earned her a shit tonne of money so respect to her.

I have the books, read some of them, the films I have watched, and I thought they were ok as far as it goes - romance with bdsm elements, morphing into an erotic thriller film with the last movie.

The books are not much worse than other examples of the genre, author does some basic research, missing important aspects to weave a romance story, which is loaded with tropes, and does little to nothing to educate while thrill. Where 50 Shades is more problematic than those other books (they are problematic too) in that it became a massive hit, exposing lots of people to bdsm ideas, activity, which have been presented in a mostly non safe, non consensual way, the problem being some have taken 50 Shades as their guide to doing kink, without doing more research - that is a big problem. Others have used it as an influence, one that allowed them to realise they are wired towards being into kink, bdsm, and have used it as a spring board to learn more, how to do things safely, and know what consent actually is. That is a good thing.

All the big bdsm, kink novels are problematic in places, and I can imagine similar feelings expressed about: The Image, Story of O, Nine and a half weeks, Secretary (a short story) etc and conversations happening back in the day about how poorly they represent kink.

Glad I settled for the synopsis. Made it seem better than I'm seeing here. Can't get into BDSM lit or film, though, so now I'm even better informed that there was more of it than I saw in the "cliff notes"-- so to speak.

I Remember the book but was more on the Author life of both partners they should have put that in the print. The last movie was more of the D/s they were more grown he respecting and protected her he always did but he was growing before he had bad past it was like pulp fiction we had to see all three movies to see the whole story they should have put them all together with some term of services that was based on the author that D/s based on love and trust still need consent. But in those times many Dom's was thinking that sub or slave should read that book really. The first and second were not the safe way for a relationship, the last one only was. But books they had to take of shelfs in some libary's ony put them in adult places cause was not for all eyes was so story's and rumors got around then people forgot. But yes when the movies came out it explained better the last I said is better verson the author said the first second one they could find a good director the last one more explaining.

But before 50 shades we had to do are own research the hard way. But good to do your own homework find what you like don't like. As long as safe sane consent.

First learned some watching series Clarrisa I learned also from reading hustler forums and BDSM art at young age later got in to more read the slave training early 2000's myslave.info Then had a Canadian Master that only trained me in asian bondage no sexual intercorse just training in mature manner. Part asianslave training at some time also long ago.
These also later in the past. My First Master Requirement to better me as person to have lady classes to dress and act like lady even walk as one be on arm in public and around people as stepford submissive.

For me, as works of art, the novels and the films fall very flat. I watched the first film beginning to end with a sub friend of mine and we laughed our asses off. No disrespect to 50 Shades lovers. But in that sense it was very entertaining. I suppose one positive spin is that it introduced a lot of people into the lifestyle that otherwise would not have expressed themselves in this way. But at the same time, it is also problematic in it's portrayal of the Dom as being a tortured asshole. In my opinion.

I haven't read the book, but I watched the movie. I think it's not bad. My original family is not happy. And I was brought up by my grandparents. It's quite hard for me to jump into a relationship and trust people. I am trying to get rid of it...

IMO the books were poorly written and I couldn’t stand the first movie. Although Dakota Johnson is cute and adorable, her acting skills just couldn’t make up for the utter lack of substance in the dialogue.

If someone is interested I recommend anything by Anne Rice (otherwise known as the Beauty books), the Story of O, The Pearl, and the fine paperback books My Secret Garden & Forbidden Flowers by Nancy Friday.

For films, have a look at “Remedy” and “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” for further inspiration. I also enjoyed “Afer Fall, Winter” although the ending is hard to watch.

Hilarious gut-busting comedy.

A poor, ill-informed and dangerous example of kink.
