I respond to most messages I receive as long as I'm approached in a respectful manner. First I would say just relax. Approach mail casually. Your getting to know them and they're also getting to know you. I oftentimes will ask them something about their profile, that intrigued me in some way. Just be yourself, I'm sure you'll do fine.
