Can it work, sure. As long as you both understand each other, don't hide things or feelings, and are careful to only spread love between yourselves why shouldn't you be happy? The problems will come if you or them become unsatisfied with the arrangement and begin trying to change the other to suit one particular taste. Trying to force a point of view onto someone just breeds resentment.
