It is different then serving a single master at the same time the same in many ways. You have no single master so if a member of the house were to give an order that could put the house of Jane in danger you are obligated to ignore it, this can create problems but none of witch will cost you your place, at most it would cause hard feelings for a while. There are 6 female house servants and 5 male servants to the house. The females are 3 maids 1 cook 1 housekeeper and myself mostly I cook when here if one of the mothers go somewhere that they might need an attendant I travel with them and act as eyes closed chaperone if I feel there is no danger to the house for an indiscretion here and there I also travel with one of the cowboys who act as security if sir John can't.
The maids are just that one is a housemaid and works with the housekeeper to keep things clean around the open part's of the house as well as oversee the cleaning of the bungalow when guests are present or as recently used as isolation for those who went off the ranch for work or fun. 2 of the maids are what are called personal maids they are both trained in France as that is one of the last places that still have a school for that aside from cleaning the upstairs where the mothers and children sleep they also know how to do hair, and make-up as well as dress people clean clothes and shoes and are fair seamstresses for the mothers. I also am lucky as I am both house servant and family so I get to use them as well Rita is the house keeper and she came with the ranch she has overall responsibility of the cleaning and staffing and she dose not care that I am family in her words I don't care who you are do your job or get beat and she means it. Last is cook she has three workers under her who do the cleaning of the kitchen and act as extra help for serving and for what sir john calls kp and we call prep work.
The males are all ranch hands and work directly under sir John they I have been told are permanent 2 handle the stable with the two stable girls who they are married to and one rides the range as sir John calls it. He is waiting for an opening as foreman on one of the other ranches to open.
Now you are saying what's the deference between a servant and an employee in one word security you can't be fired you can and are punished this can be anything from a whipping to disappearing. If you do something to protect the house that may not be in accordance with the law and are convicted when you get out you will find you have been paid your salary the wife and kids have been cared for and your job is waiting for you. If you chose to marry you receive an increase in pay a house and your wedding is paid for. It is a position that many would strive to obtain but very few get. 💋
