Figging only hurts as long as the ginger is inserted. As soon as it's gone so is the sting. I don't think I would classify it as intense pain for me, but I play fairly hard and consider it more an annoying sensation that exacerbated whatever beating I was getting at the time (usually a caning). YMMV, it's certainly unpleasant but has little to no effects after it's done.
