WW I pretty much agree with you, and examples you gave are perfect examples of why I do.
Perhaps "different cultures should always be respected" is a poor choice of words. What I meant by that was that the customs and practices of all cultures should be acknowledged as being rightfully their own. Therefore, much as we would, and try as we might, no single culture can or should be considered by all to be the gold standard if it contradicts customs and practices of others. Unfortunately, inclusivity and acceptance are not necessarily the same thing, and are often at odds with one another. There is even legal precedent for accepting "cultural norms and practices" as defense for things like you mentioned. An important part of what I said was "even if we disagree with them" which, in the examples you gave, we definitely do! |
