Tersely Pertinent

This blog is a place for me to post things to get them out of my head.

My writings give a hint of the way I view the lifestyle, both good and bad.

My projects give my hands something to do, when my writing fails me.

I hit Lowe's yesterday and found this:

Four feet of 2 inch Hardwood

Coolest thing is, it only cost me 10 bucks!

But, as I was afraid of, it was a bit too big for me to take

At least, in my grip

The good news is: I do have a lathe!

So this morning I set off to see what I can do

I cut off a hunk :

And turned it for a bit

(Sorry!  I was so interested in working on it, I forgot to take pics)

After cutting the cap off and sanding it

This is the result:

My problem is now how to stain it.

The original idea was to use a solid black stain with a built-in polyurethane but now I am thinking of using a medium brown stain I use for my cutting boards

Then, what color falls?

With the black stain, I was going to use the new red Buckskin I have coming in

But with the brown stain, I wonder if the Black Elk would not be a better choice

What do you all think?

Kelpi - Both are good but I would like to see the buckskin

blue haze(sub female) - Both would be lovely, but I'm partial to red.

As for the 2 inches being too much... I'm wondering if you could use the lathe to create a concave center "handle" area that fits your hand but leaves the ends wider to allow for increasing the number of falls.

Also, I'm wondering if you had the wider end if you could carve out the end to glue the falls inside to prevent needing an additional "cap" to cover where they are attached.

TopekaDom(dom male) - They make a device called a Chuck for wood lathes. It somehow bolts to the motor rod end and will allow you do to just as you describe. Problem is my lathe is over 20 years old and the manufacturer went out of business. So I don't know if I can put a chuck on it.

I had also planned on leaving a 2" wide "crown" at the falls end but my working the first time, I got carried away and forgot.

DidiRN(sub female) - You're killing me with these, lol. Either would be lovely. You may want to leave the handles a bit longer for balance purposes.

DigitalLupine(other male) - This is beautiful!! I love red since it's more interesting but both colours are wonderful. Hardwood is harder to come by right? Because of how often newer trees are harvested ?

lambsone - Have you ever considered multi-colored falls? And even falls of similar but varied material? Such as elk combines with cowhide or whatever other skins you have on the same flogger? Several of several different kinds.
