It always amazes me how as time passes by, the value of life, and the consequences of death become cheaper and cheaper. Addressing this question as one who has ...
Lost a parent
Had a friend needlessly and brutally murdered
Had friends and family members commit suicide
Watched as cancer took it's time taking a beloved family member...
Life is precious, on every level. Destroying it or depriving another person of it intentionally imho is the single greatest crime any sentient living creature can commit. The only acceptable reason imho is to prevent the loss of your own, or another innocent, and then only as a last resort.
Likewise, death is rarely viewed in the permanent position it's very nature demands. So people play games with it, take needless silly thrill rides taunting it, but few if any actually welcome it when it comes for them or their loved ones.
One of my favorite authors, Stephen R. Donaldson addresses this question in the only manner I find personally acceptable, so to the OP's original question, I will quote his writing from "Lord Foul's Bane" .....
“Do not hurt where holding is enough;
Do not wound where hurting is enough;
Do not maim where wounding is enough;
And kill not where maiming is enough;
The greatest warrior is he who does not need to kill.”
Respectfully submitted ....
