Music of the Heart and Soul
What music pulls you in its direction? What music rests in your soul? I am a lover of all types of music, from bagpipes to techno, I grew up in the middle of nowhere in rural farm and ranch country, so country music was the most standard to hear on the local radio stations. I did and do love country music, my favorites being Alabama, Travis Tritt, Marty Stuart, Diamond Rio, Sawyer Brown, Clint Black, Aaron Tippin, Ricky Van Shelton, and Garth Brooks, The Kentucky Headhunter, The Tractors, Brooks & Dunn. I even liked the older legends of Dolly, Charlie Daniels, Mel Tillis, Cash, and many others. But being young in the time of hits from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. I tend to listen to the first list, spending many high school weekends at the bars line dancing away. For me, country music tells stories of love, trials, and overcoming the odd, or down right catchy tunes. I enjoy listening to it while I am working the night shift, driving, when I am lounging about at home. Bring up some good classic music videos and reminisce of the “good ol days”, or dance in the living room 2-stepping with one close.
In the years I lived as a teen and young adult, I found to favor singers such as George Michael, Whitney Houston, Debbie Gibson, and Tiffany. Big Hair Bands were also all the rage. So at times I’ll change up my playlist for the big hits of the 80’s, you might catch me washing dishes to Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
When I work out that playlist is all over the place, I have Queen, Bonnie Tyler, and of course the two greatest weightlifting soundtrack artists of AC/DC, and Metallica. Every time I play Thunderstruck or Enter Sandman I'm transported back to the early 90’s in the school's weight room getting ready to leg press 500 lbs (I no longer can do that, my hips would go on strike), boy does that music get you pumped..
I’ve been a big fan of Pink, seeing her in concert was pretty amazing, her flying through the air belting out So What. She is one powerhouse on the stage. Her songs really get me energized to take on my foes or just dance about the house.
When I clean the house, and I mean really clean; where items are purged, and walls are washed, there is only one who can power me up, and that is the legendary Meat Loaf. It seems like you can clean an entire house in just 2 of his songs, as some are 13 minutes long. I've heard the 29 minute version of Paradise by the Dashboard Lights. I loved the way he could tell a story, and seeing him in concert filled a bucket on my list, twice!
As I said at the beginning I grew up in the country, so you wouldn't think I would know who Itzhak Pearlman or Issac Stern, and later on Yo-yo Ma were? Oh, but I did, thanks to PBS radio. Along with the wide range of classical music played on the radio I learned there was a whole wide world out there.. Classical music has such power. You can feel it moving through your entire body. Sometimes I would close my eyes and feel the music and a story would play out like a movie behind my closed eyes..

In the evenings after the house is clean, I’ll dim the lights, light the candles and turn on some soothing music, it could be classical, Gregorian Chants or some 80’s country love songs, who knows?
My range is wide and vast. It's a whole world,
Where does your music devotion lie, what pulls you from your shell?

I have listen to probably every type of music at some point in my life, I'm a curious person. Ever hear of The Hu? Phenomenal band if you like metal. They play Mongolian folk metal music, lots of throat singing. 10/10 recommend. Hahaha. Then I love me some Carpenters or Eagles. Having a bad day? Not anymore! Music helps me through my emotions. If I'm feeling super frustrated...rock or metal is the choice. When I'm reading or just chilling but don't want to have the tv on in the background (where I might have to pay attention to it) I'll throw on some classical, jazz, or random calming song playlist I have. The days where I want to fuck someone up....I mean bite them rock is the go-to. Then there is the work playlist. This is a running list of random current hyper fixation songs. It ranges from show tunes/soundtrack songs, rock, rap, pop, instrumental, and some covers that were originally one genre but someone made it into a cover from another genre.

I've created some playlists for play time as well. That ranges as well depending on the mood we both want to set. I want to be a brat and show you I am? First song: "You Don't Own Me" -Saygrace feat. G-Eazy. Hahaha. This one is a great way to set the tone (Shoresey fans will appreciate this). If a challenge needs to be had try "Don't Stop Believing" because what Dom will last during an impact scene, can't whip AND sing....right? Hahaha.

All kidding aside, music for me can immediately set the tone for my mood.

Yes! I’ve heard of The Hu! I find it fascinating. Music is always playing in my mind. Playlists for everything I do! I make a list for when I’m free writing, for when I’m working on a fantasy book, I found music on YouTube called Trailer Music Empire. I can write so well while listening to that.

There is a song or piece of music for every emotion and moment.

Oh man… For me? Like a lot of people it’s all over the place. I’ve said before that if I had a Mount Rushmore of four musicians they would be….
Jimi Hendrix
Joni Mitchell,
John Coltrane,
Johann Sebastian Bach

The first band that ever grabbed me being a child of the 60s with cream.. Being an instrumentalist, I was always drawn to people that could really play their instruments. That being said, there’s also certain musicians that just reach inside my soul. One of those is Jimi Hendrix. His masterful guitar playing just reaches into me directly. His album axis bold as love was a life changer for me. I’ve learned how to play a lot of that music on my cello.

One of the most influential albums ever for me was Joni Mitchell’s blue. When I heard that, I realized I wanted to compose my own music because every note in that album, every rhythm every phrase, every word, is so uniquely her. It’s one of the most personal records I’ve ever heard in my life.

Another album that changed my life was John Coltrane‘s a love supreme. That album is really almost like a classical piece. Like a symphony it’s four movements long. Again it’s very personal, very spiritual

And of course, being a Cellist? It’s Bach’s unaccompanied Cello suites. My dad had records by a French Cellist named Pierre Fournier that I grew up on. To this day, I still play them all the time and I teach them to my Cello students. I’ve been a full-time professional Cellist for a very long time.

Really, with me it’s not genre as much as authenticity. But, like I said previously, I’m more drawn to instrumentalists. I love jazz. I love blues, I love rock. I love classical.
