When checking myself on striving to be a loyal & faithful slave for a future Master, sometimes I visit slave monuments where the deeds of a slave’s loyalty are memorialized. Unfortunately, while in South Carolina to honor southern slaves, I did not get chance to visit slave Burrel’s monument in Chester County.
Burrel was slave to Robert Hemphill during American Civil War. Master Hemphill’s silverware & other valuables were hidden from Union soldiers who raided plantations. Master placed his trust in slave Burrel, and he left the place in slave’s care as he went to war. Sadly, the Master was killed in battle. Union soldiers showed up to raid his place. They confronted slave Burrel who they tortured to make him reveal where his Master’s valuables were buried. Rather betray his Master’s trust, the slave sacrificed his life. He never uttered a word. Union soldiers killed slave Burrel.
What did Master Hemphill do to get this kind of loyalty & faithfulness from his slave ? He placed his TRUST in his slave. This meant the world to the slave.
