I've never taken illicit drugs. My first art therapy clinical experience was in a women's drug rehab. I walked in the first day with trepidation and said to myself: " What do I have in common with these women? Are they going to take me seriously since my life is not as hardened as theirs." Boy was I naive. I found through the group therapy sessions that they were women just like me, with similar hopes and dreams and my heart went out to them.
They were all ages and as I listened to their stories I discovered that many of them had suffered abuse of different kinds but still abuse. This image depicts the reality of their situation. I think I used markers to create it. I used hot colors to signify intense emotions. It's much brighter in coloring in person.
