Hard Limit
Something a person will NOT do. Non-negotiable. This applies equally to both D and s types. In my opinion, once a hard limit(s) has been established it is best filed away and not even brought up. However, in very rare circumstances a persons stance on a hard limit may change over time. In those rare cases, the hard limit setter should be the one to broach the subject, imo.
For example, my previous submissive had a hard limit that involved choking and/or breath play. Two or three years into our relationship, she came to me and said that something she had seen, had her rethinking her position on choking. So we discussed it a lot (her choice) and eventually, we worked up to a hand on her throat. While it was a firm hand, it never totally constricted her ability to breathe and was more of a "suggestion" of such. All I can add was that she was VERY glad she chose to reconsider her opinion (according to her), as her orgasms were SO intense during this, that it was almost unbelievable. Experiences such as this, are the exception not the rule. Hard limits should NOT be violated and exist for valid reasons.
A common hard limit seen in profiles, mine included, is "illegal activities." But what exactly does that entail? Well, for me "illegal activities" means anything that a person would be arrested for, such as prostitution, bestiality, non-consensual abuse, extortion, selling pornography, stalking, rape (as opposed to CNC), kidnapping, etc. Until 1963, sodomy was illegal in all 50 States and in fact after 1963, some States still kept homosexual sodomy illegal, while others kept both heterosexual and homosexual sodomy illegal. In 2003, in a landmark case, Lawrence v. Texas SCOTUS ruled that American laws prohibiting private homosexual activity between consenting adults are unconstitutional. While some States chose to keep their laws on the books, it would be unconstitutional to charge someone with sodomy.
EDIT: Damn y'all are quick.....but I spent too much time, I ain't deleting this! LOL
