It's a fairly common feature on classical guitars. Helps hide any potential seam caused by book matching the back.

Lol is that what it's for? That's so clever I always assumed it was some wood like they do on some necks for 'stability'. Do you think that having many pieces in the neck actually improve the stability? I always assumed that because it was more glue in the wood it reduced sustain?
