I'm stuck in the middle of this polar vortex. I just recieved an Emergency Alert on my phone.  My province of Alberta (Canada) has been placed under a Critical Civil Emergency. The extreme cold has placed the power grid at high risk and they will be doing rotating power outages.

I think I've prepared in all the ways I can.  I've never seen weather so cold.  They are predicting -74F/-58C with the windchill tonight.  Ummmm. What the actual flying fish sticks is going on.

I've stockpiled blankets, am charging battery banks and devices.  Checked flashlight batteries,  put candles in the rooms.  Closed doors to rooms I don't use.  Turned off most of the lights. I have an extra stack of warm clothes and socks on my dresser in case I need to layer up. And filled my bathtubs with emergency water.  Did i forget anything?

What's your temperature? How are you handling the cold (if it's effecting you)? This is crazy & scary.  🥶🥶🥶

WhatamIfightingfor(dom male){CurvyB} - 19F before windchill, had an ice storm all day. I have not had weather like this in years, thankfully still knew what to do before it arrived, since before 1994 it was the norm to have very cold (for me) weather every winter.

WhatamIfightingfor(dom male){CurvyB} - If your power is going to go out adding clothing from your dresser to your bed for more thermal insulation to add to the blankets would probably not hurt.

WhatamIfightingfor(dom male){CurvyB} - The water main to your house is probably out side in your side walk if you are in the city, if not just leave your facets on, so running water prevents freezing. Just make sure outside water facets are covered, though with how cold you have things I don't think that will do much.

Water main in places that freeze are protected like there in the basement are if outside there buried with a lid. It could be next to the house but we'll insulated.

Amor Animus(dom male) - It’s cold in Texas. But not that cold! Though, I was born in a place where the actual temp hit -63 degrees C without windchill. Thank god my parents got the F out early.

Seriously though, stay warm. Check for cracks around doors and windows where air might be coming in and use towels or similar to block the flow. It helps, trust me. Hope the grid holds!!

PlutoOrange - There is practice Tummo that can rise body temperature. Monks sit in snow in mountains in tshirts. And heat temples with bodies too. I can raise my body temperature to start sweating. Before i was always 34C (instead of 36.6) this is how i found this practice. Anyone can do that by visualising fire that starts from the heart and goes like a flame to every finger. And now in stress shall be easier, best oportunity to learn as a pro. Sorry for my weird and small input, but that is what i would also do on your place.
Its also healthy as akupunktur, helps to speed up homeostasis.

Also sends you warm cloud and i put puja for spirits of your land and ask them to protect you.

LongerJohnny(dom male) - Instead of leaving extra clothes and socks out on the cold dresser put them under the covers with you. This will help for extra warmth and insulation as was suggested above, but also to keep them warm so if you do have to layer up you wont be putting on cold clothes. If you have outdoor pets you may want to set up a sheltered area for them on a patio or in a garage so they dont have too exposed to the elements for too long.
And make sure you have plenty of chicken soup!

You may also want to consider having insulated thermos bottles so you can have warm soups and water for teas or whatever hot beverages you like. Keep warm and safe. Master Ant and Gitana

Six Foot Four - It's not going to help for the current crisis, but I like to have backup indoor propane heaters & a good supply of propane to keep at least one room warm. I'd also recommend a backup cooking apparatus that can be used indoors. Anytime you're burning something, ventilation is an issue, but a hot meal can do wonders for morale. For your use case I'd pay more to get the one that requires the least ventilation and is cleanest-burning. Do a little research & you should be fine; cracking a window when it's minus silly out sucks but that hot meal...mmmm. I'd also pick up a hand-cranked radio/flashlight as a backup in case you use more power & deplete your battery banks faster than you plan for; batteries work less well in the cold. Good luck and stay warm!
